Josephine is a very smiley person. It's not a beaming, blinding smile most of the time, but a soft, cheerful smile that radiates welcoming energy without being strong or overwhelming. It's the most striking thing about her, even if it's rather understated. Clothing-wise, she wears to uniform to code and does nothing to make it her own. The uniform is, honestly, something of a blessing, because poor Josie never really learned how to put an outfit together and doesn't really care enough to learn now. Her clothes aren't bad, but they're definitely uninspired and she wouldn't stand out in a crowd. Those genuine smiles she's got definitely outshine her relatively banal wardrobe. Her hair, too, is rarely exciting, often pulled into pigtails or simply worn down. She did learn how to use a curling iron last year though and she's going to use that new, awesome skill! Look out, world! PB: Maia Mitchell
Likes: Rollerblading, the sun, warmth, the beach, thunderstorms, surfing, swimming, reading, editing, smiling, singing badly, going on ~*fun adventures*~ with her friends, helping others, learning, cooking, trying new food.
Dislikes: Not being taken seriously, snow, winter in general, but mostly the end of winter when it's been going on for YEARS, 'having' to lie to do what she thinks is best, egotistical authors, people not wearing helmets when they clearly should be, gossip.
--- Ray of sunshine Josephine is a sweet girl that's generally pretty accommodating, but don't mistake that for someone without goals of her own, or without the drive to do what she wants. In many cases she really is just easygoing, and so she'll let the more opinionated of her companions make decisions. She enjoys going on excursions planned by her friends, even if they're a little questionable, and seems up to try most things. She's not a picky person and is curious by nature, and will follow others into things for curiosity's sake even if it's not something she normally has an interest in. Her open-mindedness doesn't just include activities, but also eating - Josephine hasn't refused to eat anything that's been handed to her yet (that's edible, anyway).
Sure, she's mostly easygoing, but if she wants something? She's going for it. She'll ask at first if she needs to, but if you say it's a bad idea, or you say no, and she doesn't feel like your arguments are enough? She's probably just going to do it anyway, and not tell you about it. You know, to reduce some of the inevitable friction, even though she very much values honesty. Sometimes to achieve the best result you just have to keep your mouth shut and do what you want!
And Josephine is 99% sure that what she wants to do is the right thing to do. She won't bulldoze people when it comes to decisions about their own lives (even if she'll share her opinion without prompting), but when it comes to herself, Josie knows what's best for Josie. Failure doesn't scare her, because everything is a learning experience, and also have you met her? She can bounce back from anything! And while she won't push people too hard if she thinks they're making bad decisions or going about something incorrectly, she does wholly believe that sometimes you have to tell people that they're just doing it wrong. She can be a little blunt in delivering her opinions, and while that might come off badly to some, she clearly just wants to be honest with others and help them out. She loves to listen to people's problems, but she can be a little too quick to offer solutions when people just need someone to vent to. Shhhh, shhh, it's fine, let Josie handle this. And Josie will handle it!
In fact, she very much wants to handle it. Josephine is trying to grow up - a year into Finchwood, and things have gotten more serious, and she can't help but think about how terrified her poor brother would be if he were here or if he knew what she's up to. Though she's attempted little changes to achieve this, like asking people to call her Josephine, the biggest shift is that she's trying to put more focus into caring for others in a deliberate way. In the past she'd circumstantially end up helping, but now? Josephine wants to really do her best to improve the lives of others. She doesn't want to be a little sister she's been all her life, because now she's got real responsibilities to those around her.
She'll help anyone with most anything (as long as they're putting in work, she's not an idiot!!), and enjoys making people's lives a little easier. Any attempts at coddling her are met with a little laugh and a wave of a hand. Silly billy!! She's great, but YOU could clearly use some nice lavender hand cream! This mostly isn't a ruse, because she generally really is doing just fine. Josephine does her best to be realistic - about what they're doing and how it's scary, about how life is going to be after graduating, about how her relationships with people might change. And she tries to be honest about her feelings too, though generally will only share the rare, deeper darker ones with someone she's close with. In the end, though, her confidence in herself helps move her through life with an actual good attitude, not just a plastered on smile.
Because Josephine is honest and values being straightforward with people, she doesn't like gossiping. Being mean to people behind their backs serves no purpose, and if you've got some opinions about how they can do better, well, tell them or mind your own business. She will try to shut down any mean talk with a blunt 'that's not nice,' and, failing that, will extract herself from the conversation. She's not super righteous or anything, but she's not going to stick around for something she doesn't like.
While Josie can get a little chatty in the right company, she generally just enjoys soaking up the energy of others. Because, despite being happy and eager to be helpful, Josie doesn't really come off as energetic. She's a calm, pleasant background character, and she doesn't feel the need to be in the spotlight. She's the old loyal dog at your side, not the excited puppy bursting onto the scene. And while she's certainly self-assured, she's not vocal about it or egotistical. Josephine is a very content person, and generally a calming force. She seems most energetic when partaking in her favored hobbies - and yes, that includes editing.
[Cooking]: Josephine spent a lot of time with her mother in the kitchen, and learned how to cook from her. She's not, like, amazing, but she can make a few things very well and can at least achieve acceptable results with even slightly difficult dishes. She loves to cook comfort food for others, and loves to try out making new things. She takes requests, as long as it's not baking :( She doesn't find that quite so fun. [Editing]: She's sweet but she's a devil with a red pen. Growing up with a brother that wrote a lot (and a father with atrocious spelling), Josephine found a natural calling in noting mistakes with encouraging, but still blunt, assessments in red pen. It makes her feel devious in a fun way, and Josie will help correct classmates' essays for school until the cows come home. She has a plaque on her desk that says 'Editor in Chief' even though she's not even in Print club. Have you seen it? She put a star sticker on it to make her seem more approachable! [Rollerblading]: While this is technically just a hobby for Josephine, she's pretty good. Her parents have tried to talk her into competing, but that'd just take all the fun out of it! When the weather permits it, she rollerblades into Haling Cove and shuns the bus, and likes to set up little obstacle courses on campus with those cute, tiny little cones. [Surfing + Swimming]: Josephine has been swimming since she was a wee tot, and surfing since she was fairly young too. Like rollerblading, it's just a hobby, but she's pretty good at surfing, and drowning her would be difficult if you're, like, trying to do that for some reason?? Anti-skill [Singing]: Who knew that the child of a singer could be this bad at carrying a tune? Still, she loves to sing as poorly as she can, so look out for that in the showers in the morning, girls.
Family: Bella Linville | Mother aka "Momther" | Lounge Singer Bella is beautiful, great at singing, and absolutely a trust fund baby. But that doesn't mean she doesn't want to work - it just means that she can work doing what she loves. And the things she loves is singing in seedy bars. She pretty much refuses to move up to nicer places, and occasionally sneaks her underaged children in to see her perform. She also loves to cook, and has taught Josephine everything she knows.
Warren Linville | Father aka "Dadther" | Audio Engineer Warren started out working as a sound tech at various terrible clubs and concerts around Honolulu, but managed to prove his worth (he was always on time and literally never complained once) and has climbed up the food chain. Now a proper audio engineer, he works on recordings and only occasionally goes back to his old ways of running sound for a live event. He likes sound equipment way too much and they have a whole room just FILLED with his stuff, ugh. He's given up on trying to spell anything without autocorrect these days, so texts from him can get kind of interesting.
Warren Linville Jr. | 22 | Accountant Look, being an accountant isn't the most glamorous job, but Warren has a three year old oopsie baby and he's got to support his family. Despite being so poor in common sense that he got his girlfriend pregnant, he's rich enough in it that he knew getting a respectable job would help everyone out. Look at him go! He was going to be a musician, but that's just a hobby currently because responsibility or whatever.
Amy Barton | 21 | Secretary Josie's eventual sister-in-law, she accidentally had a baby with Warren when she was just out of high school. They're planning on getting married eventually... but for now, having an apartment together and a baby (Bart, age 3, fat and cute) works just fine for them. She's sweet and tries to get Josie to dress better, which doesn't work very well.
Adrian Linville | 18 | High School Student Adrian was accepted to Finchwood last year, but he's a much softer soul than Josephine and struggled with the idea of fighting Shadows and watching his little sister put herself in danger along with him. He begged her to not attend, and while she agreed... he refused acceptance first, forgot about everything, and she just never went through with it. It's a little hard to see him at home now. He's incredibly smart, a writer, and Josie is convinced he'll go to Hahvahd, even though he was dumb enough to believe she'd refuse with him.
Hometown: Honolulu, HI Josephine's life has been uneventful, but not unexciting. The youngest and only girl of two high school sweethearts, she had a good, comfortable upbringing that was technically cushioned by her mother's trust fund, but in practice was provided by her parents' combined income. The Linvilles live a not quite modest, but nowhere near extravagant life. They were always close knit, always sharing and talking through their problems, and always very open with one another. Even as a child, Josie was given pretty much free rein to do what she wanted within reason. Often this was because she was following her older brothers around and playing with older kids, so her parents trusted she was safe. But a lot of it, too, was simply her parents' laissez-faire but loving attitude towards parenting, where they urged their children to live and learn through mistakes. It suited Josie quite well, and the independence given to her by her parents fostered a need for this same independence, and quite a bit of confidence too. Though she knew she couldn't do everything right on the first try, she was certain that working hard meant she could do anything. Because of this, she wasn't shy about trying out new hobbies to see if she liked them, though many were dropped fairly early in her attempts at them. Gymnastics (her favorite was ribbon dancing), soccer, basketball, pole vaulting, rollerblading, surfing - Josie tried almost everything she could, though only rollerblading and surfing really stuck. Even as her skills improved in those two areas, though, she still just wanted them to be fun, and never considered doing much with them beyond a little showing off, and a lot of enjoying herself. Following her brothers around meant that Josie became very close with them, and their interests bled into hers. Her eldest brother, Warren, is a musician, and given her parents' occupations as well, music was something Josie toyed with. At 7 she started a 'band' called Josie and the Josiecats with her brother Warren and some local kids, though they only played twice in her garage and it was terrible. A lot of this was due to lack of practice, but most of it was probably due to Josie's atrocious singing. She's not ashamed of this, and it was just for fun anyway, but it definitely helped her realize she didn't enjoy singing enough to work at becoming better. That, and singing badly is kind of fun? Her middle brother Adrian is much quieter, and his interests are quite a bit different. From a young age he was writing, both fiction and non-fiction, and almost as soon as he started sharing what he wrote, Josephine started editing. She found everything she learned from Adrian's writing fascinating, but she also felt some sort of power in marking things with red pen. Assertively helping others was enjoyable, and interesting, and an amazing way to learn more about someone else. In between rollerblading and surfing and lying in the sun, Josie was reading everything written by her brother she could get her hands on to edit. Josephine's uneventful life became eventful, though, when Russell Reeve and her brother Adrian heard about Finchwood and applied, though for very different reasons. Not wanting to get left behind, she decided to apply too. And while she wasn't particularly surprised that both she and Adrian got past the initial exam, she was surprised when they got there and learned the truth about Finchwood. Josie was thrilled at this new challenge, at this new chance to help people, but Adrian wasn't so sure. Worried about the dangers of fighting monsters, and worried especially about the safety of his little sister, Adrian asked to speak with Josephine before accepting or rejecting the offer. The two were given some time to talk, and Adrian begged his sister to say no. She countered with all the good they could do... but he couldn't be convinced. With a pang of guilt, she agreed to reject Finchwood's offer and forget everything they'd been told. However, Adrian went first, and after he could no longer remember what going to Finchwood meant, Josephine accepted their offer. It was the first time she'd lied in such a big way to a family member, and she knew it wouldn't be the last... but she felt like it was something she needed to do. Though guilt tugged at her all last year, Josie settled into life in Haling Cove and at Finchwood relatively well. She put in the extra training to make sure she was competent with her weapon, she studied hard and helped her classmates, she didn't complain too much about the evils of winter. After going home for the summer and spending almost all of her time with Adrian, Josephine returned feeling a little guilty still but ready to put her all into helping those around her and taking on the Shadow World.
Persona: Lelahel Element: Lightning
Core Classes: English*, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies*, Training.
Elective Classes: Life Skills, Philosophy.
Clubs: Community Outreach, Gaming (She just wants to play Scrabble :( But she'll play anything you want if you ask!), Print.
General Performance: Josephine does well in all her classes, but shines in English and Social Studies. Any chance she's given to write a paper has her excited, mostly because then there are so many papers to potentially help edit??? She's a curious girl and enjoys learning, and often will ask related but somewhat off-topic questions in class. She tries to be realistic about her knowledge and skill sets, and thus doesn't overexert herself by taking all honors classes even though she likely could manage.
